Same Old Surprise

by The Fires Of

/

about

The lyrics and melody to “Same Old Surprise” have a deliberately naïve or childlike quality to them, sounding full of hope, but have an underlying sense of darkness. The song was recorded during lockdown and flows from an initial simplicity into more complicated time-signatures and darker textures. This darkness is punctuated by the freedom of celebratory guitars and ending with a hopeful violin outro that dissolves into present day.

lyrics

Wish a Merry Christmas, a midnight kiss, a glad midsummer and a happy new year.
Around and around and around we go--there’s sun and there’s snow always ending up here.
The pain I live my shame and nothing changes the pouring rain coming down like my tears.
How long and how far and how deep and dark must I go til I start to know how to get out of here?

I lasso the moon
now there’s snow in June
(I can go on, I go on.)

Wish a Merry Christmas, a goodnight kiss, a love to miss and a homecoming cheer.
The light in your eyes at the same old surprise and I know the sun and the snow, this is why we are here.

I lasso the moon
now there’s snow in June.
